December 4

By Diane

Kathryn and Chakotay walked through the open doors of the holodeck and into the corridor, looking every inch the Captain and First Officer. But as soon as the doors whooshed shut behind them, the facade was forgotten and they almost doubled over with unrestrained laughter.

"Oh God," Kathryn managed to get out between guffaws, "I don't know how I made it through rehearsals."

"You and me both," Chakotay agreed, his laughter joining Kathryn's.

"Poor Neelix, he's going to need all the time he can get to master those steps."

"Umm... actually, I think that was the mastered version."

"You're kidding," Kathryn gasped, her expression causing Chakotay to start laughing again. He could only shake his head to show he was serious.

Still chuckling, they moved away from the holodeck doors, trying to restrain themselves a little, unable to miss some of the curious glances passing crewmembers had thrown their way.

"Join me for dinner?" Chakotay asked. "Then maybe we could go over some of our lines." He leaned in closer confiding in her. "I need all the help I can get."

Kathryn grinned. "Sounds good. You know, I remember telling you I'd get you to..." But was interrupted by Neelix's calls from behind, the Doctor close on his heels.

"Captain, Commander." The excited Talaxian finally caught up with them, altogether missing the grins the command team quickly smothered.

"Yes Neelix," Kathryn said, snapping into captain mode once more.

"Captain, don't you think rehearsals are going wonderfully?" He was so excited he was bobbing up and down on the spot, hands gesticulating wildly in all directions. "And you know Captain, I really do think I have those steps perfected now."

Kathryn didn't miss the look Chakotay sent her, but tried her best to ignore it.

"I must say though Captain, you are superb in the role of the Princess Captain, and of course you are as well Commander... umm in the role of First Prince that is," Neelix added on.

"Thank you Neelix, I..."

"Hmm, yes, well I still think Mr. Paris made a grave error in judgement in casting the roles," the Doctor butted in. "You do realise he has me in the role of the fly Captain, don't you?" But he didn't give her the chance to reply.

Instead he moved in front of Neelix and gently took the captain by the arm, guiding her away from the prying eyes of Chakotay and Neelix. "Captain, you don't think that maybe you could have a word with Mr. Paris do you? My incredible acting talents are being wasted on the role of a fly for heaven's sake."

Kathryn quickly turned to face the Doctor, giving him her best no-nonsense glare.

"Doctor, I will say this once and only once. As much as I may come to regret this, Mr. Paris is in charge of this pantomime and he has final say in all... well... most matters. If you have a problem with the role you have been cast, see him."

"But Captain, I already did and he..." but stopped mid-sentence. He was wise enough to know when to quit.

He finished with an annoyed 'Hmph' before stomping off, muttering to himself under his breath.

Kathryn simply shook her head before turning back to a rather amused Chakotay and Neelix.

"Well, I better be going," Neelix excused himself. "I need to prepare for a hungry beta shift."

Leaving Kathryn and Chakotay behind, one look was all it took before they broke into laughter yet again. The rehearsals were certainly bringing out the colourful side of the crew.

"Now how about that meal," Kathryn reminded Chakotay as they headed for the turbolift.

"So what were you saying earlier?" Chakotay asked Kathryn. At her confused look he reminded her. "You said you knew you could get me to do something."

Understanding dawning, Kathryn smirked. "I was going to say I told you I would get you to perform someday."

Chakotay returned her smile as they entered the lift. "Well, let's just say this opportunity was too good to pass up. And anyway, I wouldn't want anyone else playing this role."

Kathryn and Chakotay turned to one another and smiled, the turbolift doors closing behind them.
